evals and such

yup, that's my mom, folks. Definitely an odd duck...er...chicken.

I talked to our favorite sailor last night, things are going well. He got a 3.8 on his last work evaluation (out of a possible 4.0), which puts him in the "must promote" category (!). Apparently he's doing a great job and his superiors are impressed. Why am I not surprised?

Evals go a long way, but he also has to get a good score on his written test in a couple of weeks in order to beat out all of the other E-3's (that's a pay grade) looking to get themselves promoted to E-2's, The next chance to take the test is in 6 months.

Apparently the Navy is working towards a new set of criteria for advancement, called a 5 Vector model, where each sailor has to improve a certain percentage in five different areas (education, evals, physical, etc.) before getting a promotion. The theory is that the new way will level the playing field and force people to improve themselves instead of relying merely on "time in" or test scores.

SOOO, if you think of it, you could pray that he'll be able to get lots of studying in and do really well. This promotion would mean a lot of good things, including a pretty hefty raise. =)
