Wherein one project kickstarts another

So y'all remember a few years back when we bought this house and had big plans for renovation? Well.  Slowly but surely changes are happening and we've documented a few of them in this space.  Sometimes the changes are little, like a new mattress that actually fits our bedframe (thanks, E+J!) or a new vintage picture framed and hung in just the right place.
Other times the project is so big we have to have help. This time it's a little of both. First, a local contractor is outside, completely replacing the eaves on the entire house (and a good number of the tails). The nests and hives are not being replaced, sorry birds and bees.
The boys are pretty excited to have 3 substitute teachers and subjects they "will actually use when they grow up."
I am excited that I can sip coffee and bake cinnamon rolls for said teachers and watch the project get done without ever picking up a hammer myself. The H is excited that he has a good job to pay for all this AND that it is being done right (as opposed to several of the repairs done before we moved in that were...mediocre). The dog is the only one not sure what to think.
We're going with glorified particleboard, otherwise known as LP SmartSide. I really really really hope I do not regret not splurging on real wood later...but the research I did was fairly convincing and the price was right, so there you have it.
New tails and eaves that will make our insurance company happy. (Side note: can you spot the middle child in his "tree lift" at the edge of our property?)
And on the DIY end of things we have an indoor project several years in the making. When we moved in we knew that the downstairs bathroom had a coat of primer and unfinished trim/door.  The plan was to wait for paint to be really cheap and a nice weekend and spruce the joint up a bit.  Well, it finally happened! Primer Purple has been replaced by Pyrex Yellow!
I have stain for the cabinets, trim, and door ready and waiting for next week, but wanted to get a pic up now in case I never got around to it later. ahem.

Do like a duck does

On wet days like this, I miss our ducks. I hope you're enjoying them, Mr. Craigslist guy with big ambitions for a small property. All that to say, today we went out to play in the mud for awhile, just like ducks. quack.

Boy#1 worked HARD (his emphasis) at spreading hay. About 90 pounds at a time, *if* you can believe it. Until he found an earthworm. Then he played HARD (my emphasis) at finding the perfect new home for wormie, complete with hay to sleep under and dirt to sleep on and neon orange walls to give a sense of...containment.

Boy#2 quickly tired of spreading hay, preferring instead to use his "dirtbike" to flatten some ruts in the yard and his new shovel to flatten some dinosaur heads (giant snowballs).

Boy #3 discovered that the sidewalk makes a perfect escape route,

and was NOT thrilled to be re-routed back to our area again. Mollification came in the form of snack. And then he wanted to nurse on the porch before going off on another rambling adventure. Yes, we still do that and no, it's not weird.

Even the dog was out, if only by default. According to her, cold mud is only slightly more appealing than whining almost all alone in the house (apart from the sleeping dad).

I spread a little hay and took a few pictures. The lilacs are forming buds, I cannot wait to see them in full bloom for the first time.

The grape vines are looking pretty dead, but I pulled a bunch of them over to our side of the fence (neighbors don't seem to want to harvest) and I know from last summer that this vine still produces yummy concords.

I also grabbed a handful of tiny bulbs to bring inside to force. I don't know what they are, they were a surprise found in the side yard when I was planting a little tree last fall. I'm hoping for daffodils, but they're pretty tiny. Do snowdrops have bulbs? And, for the record, this is why I don't *do* my nails. Though I have heard mud is good for your skin?

PS: If you have a kid who still likes picture books, do try to find Do Like a Duck Does at your local library. Super cute, even for a girl with no rhythm like me.

Christmas on any given day part 2

sooo...I didn't take nearly enough pictures of our Christmas with the in-laws. anyone else have any they care to share? These 2 will have to suffice.

Look, matching outfits! Probably the only year we'll do them, but they were free! and they're cute! and now we have black church pants all around (turns out most of my church clothing for the under 4 crowd involves short sleeves and shorts. I miss summer.)
We did do the obligatory "gather as many of your presents as you can find and look like you're happy with them" pic. I will never admit to how many of these came from my mother's attic or a yard sale or thrift store or some such. (Actually, that's not even remotely true. I'll brag to anyone who asks.) If you don't see the gift you bestowed, feel honored; this means we loved it so much it is already a part of our belongings to the extent that we cannot locate it at the present time.

little note about the Cabbage Patch Kid: My mom made that outfit, and I had a matching one for me when I was 5. Yup, she (and I) was really that cool.
Awww, even the dog got a present.

uh... really?!

So, snow? In October. Come on.

Fer likes it.

Putz dog is not so sure, but she got in the mood eventually and thoroughly enjoyed eating the snowballs chucked her way.
Jury is still out on the ducks....

I was not ready for this.

WW: a little something to distract you from the news...

...in no particular order, though each is connected to an interesting story. Too bad this is supposed to be a wordless wednesday post ;-)

twenty minutes ago:

while assembling the ingredients for Abuela's Dr. Cuz's famous key lime pie,

"lp, are you ready for a nap?"
"eh."
"as soon as I finish this, it's time to lay down, ok?"
"mm-kay"

exactly three minutes after that:

the question is, nature or nurture?

ETA: 2 hours after the last shot (and this one totally counts as a belly shot):

la acqua naturale

This is my new chore. I get to water the dog every day! Can you tell how excited I am?It's a big job, first I have to make sure it's the right temperature.
Then I have to taste it to see if she will like it.Sometimes I need to taste it again just to be sure. The kitty always tries to take a drink too, so usually I try to distract her
She likes me a lot. but sometimes she likes to go away too. It's very dissappointing. But mommy still loves me, especially when I give her kisses! Maybe next time I'll tell you about the other thing I get to do every day ;-)

what is it

with us and cats?? StupidCat/Psycho Kitty/Albacore used to suck on mr. waaz's dirty black boot socks (never the clean ones and rarely the white ankle socks), knead the floor, and purr like mad with an "interrupt-me-and-bad-things-will-happen" look on his face. Then Temporary began sucking on his own belly to the extent that the ONE time we let him "have at it," he left a wet spot of drool on the couch. I thought we were going to be ok with Cosmo, 10 weeks old (or so) and no sucking. Then the dog had to go and get in a fight--ok, had to try to make friends with a protective pit bull--and now every time I go outside and leave the animals to wallow in the misery that no human interaction brings, I return to--you guessed it--Cosmo trying to suck on the dog's jowly neck, kneading her leg and purring, eyes glazed over and ears cocked for the first sound of the screen door. Weird, I tell ya.

I spy with my little eye

first one to guess what is holding the Putz's attention gets a prize. I'll update with the "answer" pic tomorrow. I'll give you one clue: The boy is just as intrigued, but wouldn't hold still long enough for me to snap a clear pic (trust me, I tried).

big boy bath

anyone feel like adding captions? until then, think of this as a old-timey silent slide show of sorts.
