(home)school(ish)

...the important thing to realize here is that HE is reading ME Are You My Mother, not the other way around. Complete with proper inflection and timing....we are just beginning to play actual games, wherein one follows directions and takes turns. Funny aside: When we were done playing I said, "Look at that long train of dominoes!" and tonka immediately ran to get his train for the track. Ever the literalist.
...About once a week I run the dishwasher and tonka's job is to sort the clean silverware. He does a pretty good job, and is NOT happy if I try to do it myself behind his back.
...This was supposed to be a lid matching activity, but after matching all of the lids to their respective containers, tonka decided it should become a pouring activity. Next time I'll add water and get out the little ceramic pitcher.
... P is for Patrick. First time I've ever asked him to trace a letter, and I am quite impressed. He decided to use every color marker--blue first and brown last--and his attention span was exactly 8 markers long.

Here's the first few pics that we took with the new camera:

The very first pic

'Fer and momma

Dad and the "killer dog"

The sad thing about this photo is that every one in it is stone sober. Just because you have a good camera doesn't mean you take good pictures.

Reading the Fleece

Ever read the story of Gideon? Go on, I'll wait. It's short (unless you want the introduction and conclusion, in which case you'll have to read a couple chapters. worth it.).

Yeah. That's me with this whole "going home for a visit" thing. I've been trying--first passively and then actively--since Thanksgiving. Each time a new date/plane/cheap cabbie gracious relative came up, I would get my hopes up and pray, "Oh God, this would be a great time for me to go home. Thank you for working out the details." And then the details would get all messed up, and I would find myself on the couch, leaking disappointed and frustrated tears into my knitting/hot chocolate/sleeping child's hair. Right before Christmas, I started to get it. I even told my dr. cuz that "I'm finally learning that God will probably let me do what I want if I force the issue...It'll just be an uphill struggle with many setbacks and detours and headaches until I finally realize that I'm going the wrong way and stop and ask for directions. Maybe one day I'll ask and then wait for an answer before I set off..."
After hitting "send" on that email and copying the words into my journal, I ruminated on them for a few days until slowly my prayers turned to "Ok, God, here's all the possible routes; I've marked them clearly on this paper for you, along with the pros and cons of each. Any directions you'd like to highlight?" And then I packed my bags again and waited. Nothing. Just more "no exit" signs that I chose to read as "detour" or "decreased speed ahead" for weeks.
This weekend was my last attempt(s). The suitcases are still in the car, but even before I made the last call to the terminal to check availability of seats I knew I was not going anywhere. God wants me here right now. I don't know why he doesn't want my family to see the youngest outlaw and reacquaint themselves with his older brother, but I DO know that I am ok with taking a backseat and enjoying the view. I am not putting out any more fleeces, and I am not forcing the issue. Bring on the chocolate and the knitting (no tears this time).

ps: Here we are, together for the long haul. pic not exactly related to post, but whatever.

Our House is Back to as "normal" as it gets...

These two are the last of our sneaky cat's second litter. As of Wed. they are all gone and we are back to only 4 "under 3's" in our house. phew.

In comparison, Tuesday night we had 10 "under 3's" in our house with a collective 36 legs. yeah, thirty-six.

Allow me to explain: I was the on-duty stray animal guy on Tuesday. I had just gone to bed at around 9, which is slightly on the late end considering the alarm was set for 4:50 (ugh). I had been in bed for about 10 minutes, just long enough to get really comfy and settled in, when the duty phone rang. Downstairs. I got up and ran down to answer it. My co-worker (who is conveniently not at work this week) decided to go to the gym. On the way home from the gym he happened upon a squeaking box. A squeaking box of five puppies, approximately 6 weeks old. Being the on duty guy and therefore "responsible," I tell him to bring the pups to the house and I will take them to the kennel in the morning. After bringing the outside dog crate in and getting the puppies settled, I again laid down and closed my eyes, hoping to get at least a few hours of sleep before the alarm went off at 4:50 a.m.

The boys are just getting over a tenacious cold, and were therefore up more often than usual, and the puppies were up several times, but I must have gotten some sleep because at 5:20 the following morning I bolted awake and realized that although I had set the alarm, I had neglected to activate it. Now I'm late and have to provide transportation for 5 pups and the last kitten who is being adopted out today. I should also tell you that our cat carrier is not that cool and the kitten figured out how to get out of it. I drove the whole way to work with one hand on the wheel and the other holding a 12 week old kitten, trying not to get clawed/bit by the attempts it was making to escape.

Fun week. I am looking forward to this 4 day weekend. So this Thanksgiving I am truly thankful for a "normal" house of 4 living things under three years old with a mere 12 legs. 2 of which are attached to knees that are dangerously close to crawling, but I'll take it.

a post with words on*

*this one's for granny boo, who asks all the right questions and sends all the right stuff.

Now that the monkey is able to sit up (mostly) on his own, he has his very own seat. He approves. So does Tonka.

I'm pretty sure they are talking about me, but what can ya do.

Do you see what I see? Here, let me show you another way:

Elaboration: until rather recently, the options for the youngest boy were rather limited (milk, milk, and...um...more milk), with no potential for variety in the near future. Tonka, for the record, was not interested in varying his diet for close to a year, and I wasn't even planning to offer the monkey experimental veggies from my plate until at LEAST 6 months. Baby-led solids, ya know? Well, this baby had other ideas. He attacked my sweet-potato laden finger one day last week on its way to my own mouth, and is now hooked on anthing orange and mashed. This is how he eats, with one or both hands FIRMLY gripping my hand and guiding finger or spoon to his mouth. There is no playing around, basically no tongue-thrust, and lots of swallowing and babbling. After about 2 T, he's done, which is still enough to impress me. The ubiquitous "they" say this might help with the puking (did I tell you monkey's other nickname is "puke-face"?), but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Where did my newborn go, and can I have him back please??

PS: Mom, I spy a high chair and cover, popsicle sticks (and mold, unseen but used), spoon, and socks. Oh, and in the background a cookie sheet. Thanks!
