Yes, Hubie literally sits on the chick. The chick prefers this usually - warmth and protection? If you are raising them without a hen they are supposed to be at about 95° during the early days. Hubie must be doing a good job because the chick poops. Yes, that's how you know if you have a healthy chick.
The other place the chick likes to be is on Hubie's back. This amuses me.

This last one is the chick hiding under Hubie. In case it looks like some sort of puzzle.

This is a phoenix father (the little squirt) and an auracauna mother ("easter egg" chicken). I imported a gorgeous (and quite full of himself) rooster a week and a half ago, thinking I'd never get a chick from the phoenix. I think this egg gestated about 6 weeks (twice as long as it is supposed to take).
