Here's one vaccine without a bad rap:

Rabies.
Nick went over to pick blackberries in the field behind our schoolhouse yesterday. Not too long later he came home, showed me a bloody scratch, and told me that a coon jumped out of the hedge and attacked him.
The coon couldn't be located, though our trooper neighbor launched an immediate search. He then had to notify all the other neighbors with dogs and kids and anyone likely to be walking around in the general area.
Nick started the shots, including the rabies vaccine, yesterday. He'll be having 4 more sessions over the course of the next weeks. If we miss any, he has to start over. Since Rabies is always fatal (the coon in question has 1-5 days left to live), the shots seem "worth" it.

I'm gonna have to agree with you on this one. No luck finding the coon, huh. bummer. I wonder if Nick'll ever pick berries for you again.

Actually, he wanted to go back today, now that he is "immune". Turns out that if he is ever bit/scratched again, all he'll need is a booster. Clearly, we should all just get the rabies shot as infants (like dogs and cats) so we're ready for country life. yuppers, that's the ticket.

A kid died of rabies while I was in Africa on my hospice trip. he'd been bitten by a dog but when he went to get the vaccine, they were all out. before he died he bite his mom.
I'm depressed now.
